This year, Hope through Housing delivered over 2,577 backpacks filled with essential school supplies to children across Southern California and in Texas. Through 54 back-to-school events, we’ve helped thousands of students start the school year with confidence and the tools they need to succeed.
Since the initiative began, more than 11,800 backpacks have been distributed thanks to the support of donors, volunteers and partners like Target, Walmart, Amazon, the Empire Strykers and Verve Community church. But the need continues to grow.
In 2024, families across the U.S. spent more than $125 billion on back-to-school shopping, with an average of $586 per child. For many of the families we serve, that cost is simply out of reach – making something basic like a backpack a barrier to learning.
Through our Building Bright Futures program, Hope through Housing supports students year-round with free after-school programs, literacy and STEM enrichment and scholarships.
