Texas children are boosting their academics with homework assistance, building new friendships and developing healthier lifestyles – all thanks to $195,000 in donations that funded the creation and expansion of Hope through Housing after-school programs.
“This has been a huge deal because three years ago we didn’t have a program in Texas,” Regional Director Lakeshia Johnson said. “It’s been so exciting to be able to bring this program to support so many children. I can’t wait to see what the future brings for the Texas program.”
Hope through Housing started an after-school program at the Sunflower Terrace affordable housing community in 2021, thanks to a local donation of $65,000.
The pilot program provided children with basketball hoops, books, laptops and headphones, digital reading programs and refurbished space to host events.
In 2022, Hope through Housing received another $65,000, allowing us to expand similar amenities and activities to the Colony of Humble affordable housing community. We hired two dedicated service coordinators to guide children during events. Some 60 children across both properties now enjoy the after-school program each week.
“My son loves the after-school program because they take care of him and he has fun with his friends who also attend the program,” said Maybelline Valerio, Sunflower Terrace resident. “I like it because the program provides him with homework help and that has helped improve his grades greatly. I also love the staff member that leads the program – she’s so friendly.”
In July, we received a third $65,000 donation. The funds will fuel an expansion to accommodate 90 children on a weekly basis.
“We serve a real need here with our after-school program,” Johnson said. “We’re making sure our kids stay healthy and keep on track to achieve in school. As our program grows, we’ll be able to help more kids and that warms my heart to know that the work we do will provide a refuge for so many children.”
