When Andrea first heard about National CORE’s Vista Verde affordable housing community, she saw an opportunity to create a stable home for her four children – ages 20, 9, 8, and 6.
In 2021, Andrea and her kids moved in, excited to be part of something new. But even with the lower rents, her unsteady paychecks still created challenges.
For years, Andrea worked in healthcare and as a teacher’s assistant at an elementary school. But the hours were short and the pay was low.
“I loved working with kids,” she said. “But I knew if I wanted to do more for myself and my family, I had to make a change.”
That change came in the form of CORE Academy, our workforce development program. CORE Academy provides training for entry-level jobs in high-demand fields like property management, property maintenance, social media marketing and digital media production.
Andrea took a leap of faith in January, leaving her school job over winter break to join a property management training cohort.
“Time was just passing me by. I wanted more,” she said. “I want to help people in a different way — not just individuals, but entire families.”
Andrea graduated in February and quickly transitioned into a new role with National CORE. Now, she works as a leasing consultant at two properties in the Inland Empire, assisting with resident files, certifications, and anything else her team needs – especially at Mosaic Gardens, where she’s temporarily filling in for a property manager on maternity leave.
What stood out most in her transition to property management was the sense of purpose she found. The job isn’t just about buildings or paperwork; it is about people. She already knew firsthand how deeply the National CORE and Hope through Housing care for their residents and communities. That commitment resonates with her, especially through programs like the after-school initiative at Sunset Heights, where children receive support that extends far beyond the classroom.
Now, Andrea is focused on learning, growing and contributing wherever she’s needed. Her goal is clear: to continue advancing in her career and to deepen her impact. With her dedication and heart for service, Andrea is well on her way.
“I probably would have gone back to what was familiar – school jobs or healthcare. But I’m so thankful I didn’t,” she said. “CORE Academy opened doors I didn’t know were possible.”
