Volunteers Inspire Young Readers
Laughter and the sound of turning pages filled the community center at Sunset Heights. Children gathered to celebrate Read Across America with volunteers from Women of Hope.
Volunteers spent the afternoon reading with children. They encouraged a love for books and learning. They also helped create moments of connection beyond the pages.
Volunteers Support Youth Literacy
For many volunteers, the day showed the power of reading together. Similar programs took place at 28 National CORE affordable housing communities across California and Texas.
These events support Hope through Housing’s focus on literacy, learning, and youth development.
Lucy Bender has volunteered with Women of Hope for five years. She said Read Across America gives volunteers a meaningful way to spend time with children.
Children Build Confidence Through Reading
Children read stories and created their own rhymes. The playful style of Dr. Seuss inspired the activity.
“Watching the kids come up with their own rhymes was my favorite part,” Lucy shared. “They were so silly and creative. You could really see their imaginations working.”
Volunteers and students kept reading together throughout the afternoon. The activity helped children practice reading, creativity, and confidence.
Reading Creates Connection
Sonja Coffee has also volunteered with Women of Hope for five years. She reflected on the deeper impact of reading with children.
“Reading with the kids is so important. It teaches them patience and compassion, and it allows them to help each other,” she said. “Some of the kids are at different reading levels, so they’re learning to teach and support one another. It’s so fulfilling to volunteer with an organization that really makes a difference.”
After-School Programs Help Children Grow
At Sunset Heights, service coordinator Stephanie Joseph has helped shape the after-school program. She helps create a place where children feel supported and encouraged to grow.
The program connects with Hope through Housing’s Building Bright Futures initiative. This work supports youth learning, confidence, and social development in affordable housing communities.
“I like to refer to these kids as world changers because that’s what they are,” Stephanie said. “Whether they become entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, whatever they choose, they’re going to change the world.”
