For more than 30 years, Andy Wright, co-founder of National CORE and the Hope through Housing Foundation, has helped build something truly special, something we often joke “is in the Kool-Aid.” His work embodies the spirit of It’s a Wonderful Life, where the impact of one person’s actions can transform a community. It’s about more than providing shelter; it’s about offering a helping hand and changing lives. Even today, Andy reminds us, “We have yet to scratch the surface.”

Now retired and enjoying his golden years, Andy reflects on his own wonderful life, one shaped by both blessings and challenges. Raised by a single mother, he learned to appreciate the small but important things – a roof over his head and food on the table. When Andy met Jeff Burum, he found not just a new career path but a deeper purpose. “My involvement in National CORE and Hope through Housing has given me far more than I will ever give back,” Andy says.

Andy’s giving heart sets him apart. Now an emeritus board member, his dedication to our mission continues to bring him back. Most recently, he became a passionate advocate for our seniors, launching Hope through Housing’s first senior fitness program, Senior Fit – an initiative that fosters not only physical health but also community spirit.

In the spirit of George Bailey’s selfless acts in It’s a Wonderful Life, National CORE created the “Hero of Hope” award to honor individuals like Andy, whose generosity and compassion change lives. It is our great honor to recognize Andrew B. Wright as the first “Hero of Hope.”
