At Sunset Heights, inspiration came to life when San Antonio Spurs guard Jordan McLaughlin took the mic to share his journey – one filled with focus, setbacks and grit.
The visit was part of a carefully curated youth speaker series designed by Service Coordinator Stephanie Joseph to expose kids to real people with real stories. Each year, the lineup reflects the dreams and interests of the residents themselves – a mix of athletes, artists and professionals who show that there’s more than one path to success.
Jordan’s story hit home. He grew up in Rancho Cucamonga, went undrafted after college and fought his way into the NBA through perseverance and a strong work ethic.
“Staying focused is key,” Jordan said. “Both of my parents were athletes, so from a young age, I understood that hard work is what sets you apart. Even during the off-season, I push myself to train harder so I’m fully prepared when the season begins.”
Jordan also emphasized his focus on academics. At USC, he earned multiple degrees in addition to playing basketball.
For one resident, a young man named Omar, the event was more than just a chance to listen – it was a moment to lead. He stepped up and interviewed Jordan, asking thoughtful, personal questions like: “How did you push through discouraging times?” and “Who was your toughest opponent?”
Joseph created the series as a way of giving her after-school children a chance to see new opportunities. Today, young men from multiple properties where she has worked travel for the program.
Joseph said she selects speakers after hearing from her children about their interests, aspirations and potential.
“When we treat kids like world changers, they begin to believe it, and they realize that the only limits to their possibilities are the ones they set for themselves,” she said.
Previous speakers have included a cartoon artist, a scuba diver and other professionals who represent nontraditional but exciting career paths.
This event concluded with a high-energy raffle featuring autographed basketballs, a fun mobile gaming challenge to test the kids’ NBA skills and a generous giveaway. Every participant went home with a free designer T-shirt, socks and a toiletry kit.
