State Treasurer John Chiang to receive “Housing Advocate of the Year” award

Nov 3, 2015 | News Releases

john-chiangRancho Cucamonga, Calif- California State Treasurer John Chiang will receive the “Housing Advocate of the Year” award from the Hope through Housing Foundation at its annual gala Thursday, Nov. 5.

As Treasurer, Chiang has led efforts to promote public-private partnerships and regulatory reforms to address a housing shortage he describes as “one of the greatest threats to our future prosperity.” He serves as chairman of the Tax Credit Allocation Committee and the Debt Limit Allocation Committee and is on the board of the Housing Finance Agency – three of the state’s four major housing agencies.

The shortage of housing in California has sent housing costs soaring to the point where more than a third of working renters pay more than 50 percent of their income toward housing. This has wide-ranging impact, from overcrowded conditions and substandard housing to employers leaving the state because they can’t pay their workers enough.

“Treasurer Chiang’s commitment to housing is reframing the discussion and making it the priority it needs to be,” said Steve PonTell, President and Chief Executive Officer of National Community Renaissance (National CORE). “We are honored to present him with our 2015 Housing Advocate of the Year award.”

“Treasurer Chiang is honored by this acknowledgement of his work to increase the production of affordable housing,” according to a statement from the Treasurer’s Office.

National CORE, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit community builders, founded Hope through Housing in 1998 to provide life-changing social services to residents and communities.

The Nov. 5 Gala, “An Evening of Hope: Rolling out the Red Carpet,” will be held at the Sheraton Fairplex in Pomona. The event is designed to raise awareness of and generate financial support for the transformative work Hope through Housing does.

“We understand that to create long-term and significant community change, housing is only a first step,” said Ciriaco “Cid” Pinedo, President of Hope through Housing. “True revitalization occurs when there is access to resources that promote prosperity, quality of life and physical well-being.”
