Building Bright Futures Scholarship Helps Students Turn Dreams Into Careers
From emergency medicine and school psychology to labor law and nursing, this year’s Building Bright Futures Scholarship recipients are pursuing careers focused on helping others overcome challenges, access opportunities and build stronger communities.
To support those goals, Hope through Housing awarded a record $45,000 in scholarships to 33 high school seniors, college students and adult learners through its 2026 Building Bright Futures Scholarship program.
Since launching in 2020, the program has awarded $216,000 to students pursuing college, trade school and career training opportunities while living in National CORE affordable housing communities.
The scholarship program helps remove financial barriers that can stand between students and their educational goals, allowing them to focus on building careers that create opportunity for others.
Building Futures Through Education
The students receiving scholarships this year are united by a shared desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
For Trinity, that path leads to emergency medicine.
After experiencing a serious accident and seeing firsthand the impact healthcare professionals can have during a crisis, she is working to become an emergency room physician.
“Having gone through an emergency room experience gave me so much motivation and an even stronger purpose than before.”
Marcia is pursuing a Ph.D. in school psychology and hopes to help children and families navigate educational systems that can often feel overwhelming.
“Now I can focus on my research, my thesis and my future instead of constantly stressing about survival.”
Fatima plans to become a labor law attorney after witnessing vulnerable workers struggle to find justice in the workplace.
“So many people live in fear, and it prevents them from getting justice.”
Leilani is studying environmental design and hopes to create greener, healthier spaces for children growing up in underserved communities.
“Being able to safely go outside and enjoy nature shouldn’t depend on what neighborhood you grow up in.”
After fleeing Afghanistan with her family following the 2021 Taliban takeover, Aulia is pursuing a nursing degree and hopes to inspire other Afghan girls to continue their education.
“I am so happy I’m living here, free.”
Investing in Potential
The Building Bright Futures Scholarship supports students living in National CORE affordable housing communities by helping cover educational expenses that can create barriers to higher education and career training opportunities.
Many of these students qualify for grants and scholarships because of their lack of family income. The Hope scholarship helps cover costs often missed by financial aid, such as food, books and transportation.
The scholarship is part of Hope through Housing’s broader youth development efforts, which include after-school programs, teen clubs, college and career guidance and educational enrichment opportunities for children and teens across California and Texas.
“Scholarships had a profound impact on my own college journey and opened doors that may not have otherwise been possible,” said Alyssa Cotter, executive director of the Hope through Housing Foundation. “That experience shaped my belief that when students have support and someone investing in their potential, it can change the trajectory of their lives.
“Through the Building Bright Futures Scholarship, we want our residents to know that their dreams are worthy of investment and that financial barriers should never stand in the way of pursuing an education, building a career and creating the future they envision.”
