Routine health screenings can require scheduling an appointment and paying out of pocket. But now individuals can access free screenings from the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health at events hosted by Hope through Housing as part of the new Healthy Futures Initiative.
Led by Hope through Housing, the Healthy Futures Initiative brings together partners from across the Inland Empire to expand access to wellness, prevention and healthy living opportunities that improve quality of life and strengthen individuals, families and communities.
On Tuesday, while 139 children learned new soccer skills with professional players from the Empire Strykers, parents stepped inside for free blood pressure checks, diabetes screenings and consultations with a physician.
“I was a little overdue on my checkup,” said Marysol, who was screened while her 8-year-old son learned new soccer skills. “I was already here. It was perfect. And my favorite part, it was free.”
Jeanette, who brought her 9-year-old son to the camp, said the screenings address another challenge facing many families: the cost of healthcare.
“I’m grateful for the health screening because I feel like a lot of people don’t have health insurance nowadays because it’s so expensive,” she said. “If they can catch something here, then they can make appointments or get the help they need before it’s too late.”
Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling Company, one of the sponsors of the Healthy Futures Initiative, passed out Dasani water and Powerade at the camps.
“We want to do as much as we can in this city and any community that we serve,” said Ernie Rivera, general manager of the company’s Rancho Cucamonga and Victorville facilities.
“A healthier community starts with showing up for one another and that’s why we’re here,” he said.
